Playground Safety
Parents, HOAs and PTAs, it may be up to you to see your neighborhood and school playgrounds are checked for safety.

One thing you can do is to click on this link for
Playground Safety Publications to print a copy of a number of safety checklists and handbooks. To have a free copy of any of the publications mailed to you, click here.  These booklets have lots of great information about playground equipment safety, fall zones, surface material, and inspection checklists.

You can check the depth of playground surface by digging with a hand trowel and request that it be topped off if it is too low. If the school is short on funds, perhaps the PTA can raise the funds. If it is a neighborhood, contact your HOA to make sure they are budgeting for the replenishment of "fall zone materials", "pine bark mulch", "playground wood chips", or whatever name they use for surface material meant to protect your children when they fall. If it is a public playground, you can perform the checklist referenced at the above link and notify the park official of hazards.

Your landscaper or grounds maintenance may already handle this work, or you can contract directly with us to complete the work which may save you some money. If it is a separate line item on the budget, you can put it out to bid.

We are in favor of playground wood chips based on the fall test results listed in The Handbook, and as a practical matter wood chips aren't tracked into schools, homes or cars like sand is nor is it thrown by children like pea gravel (those tiny rocks that also end up in noses and ears!).

Playground Wood Chips

"More than 200,000 children are treated each year in U.S. hospital emergency rooms each year for injuries associated with playground equipment. Most injuries occur when children fall from the equipment onto the ground." (Excerpt from
The Handbook for Public Playground Safety, published by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.)

Playground wood chips are one of the most effective means of providing protective surfacing around playground equipment, but you must maintain 9-12" depth for maximum protection (6-9" for toddler playgrounds).

Texas Power Mulch utilizes a blower system to install playground wood chips quickly and cleanly to virtually any location on your property.

In most cases we are in and out in 1-2 hours, so kids don't miss their outdoor playtime.

1 yard of playground wood chips covers 324 sq ft (18'x18') to a depth of 1".

Products meet ASTM Safety and Impact Guidelines.
